Here in St. Louis, we root for the home team Cardinals, but when Seth Lancaster became an eighth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies, all of us who spend our lives celebrating clear vision gave a little cheer. During his junior year with the NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, Lancaster was struggling with what he thought was pink eye. His left eye was constantly irritated, and he found himself swinging wildly at bad pitches. The infielder’s batting average sank from a .326 in 2016 to a less-than-impressive .250 in 2017. They made arrangements for him to see an ophthalmologist, where he discovered that it was not pink eye that was causing his frustration, but rather a viral eye infection in his cornea. Just a few hours after the procedure, Lancaster was seeing better than ever. By his senior year, he’d brought his batting average back up to a respectable .305 with a .454 on-base percentage. His improvement put him back in the sights of Major League scouts, and the rest is soon to be history.
