Can Vision Correction Change Your Eye Color?

As of 2026, vision correction covers several distinct procedures, from corneal surgery to lens replacement. A common question across all of them is whether any of these procedures can change eye color.

Can vision correction change my eye color?

No. No vision correction procedure changes eye color. Eye color comes from melanin in the iris, and refractive surgery never alters the iris. LASIK, SMILE, and PRK reshape the clear cornea; EVO ICL adds a clear lens behind the iris; Custom Lens Replacement swaps the eye’s internal lens for a clear implant. After lens-based surgery colors may look brighter, but that reflects clearer light transmission, not a change in eye color.

What determines your eye color?

Eye color is determined by melanin, the pigment in the iris — the colored ring around the pupil. Higher melanin concentrations produce brown eyes, while lower concentrations produce hazel, green, blue, or gray. The amount of melanin is set primarily by genetics and is established in early childhood. Because eye color lives in the iris, only something that alters iris pigment could change it.

Can LASIK change my eye color?

No. LASIK does not change eye color. LASIK reshapes the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, to redirect light and sharpen focus. The cornea sits in front of the iris and is completely transparent, so reshaping it has no effect on the iris or its pigment. Eye color is set by melanin in the iris, which LASIK never touches.

Can SMILE change my eye color?

No. SMILE does not change eye color. SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) corrects vision by removing a small disc of tissue from within the cornea through a tiny opening, reshaping the cornea from the inside. Like all corneal procedures, it works entirely on the transparent cornea and never reaches the iris, where eye color pigment is located. Eye color is unaffected.

Can PRK change my eye color?

No. PRK does not change eye color. PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) reshapes the cornea’s surface after gently removing its thin outer layer, which regenerates during healing. As a corneal procedure, PRK works only on the clear front of the eye and never affects the iris or its melanin. Eye color stays the same before and after PRK.

Can EVO ICL change my eye color?

No. EVO ICL does not change eye color. EVO ICL is an implantable collamer lens — a clear lens placed inside the eye — behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. Because the iris sits in front of the implant, the lens is not visible from outside and cannot alter the eye’s color. The iris and its pigment remain untouched.

Can Custom Lens Replacement change my eye color?

No. Custom Lens Replacement (CLR, also known as refractive lens exchange) does not change eye color. CLR replaces the eye’s natural internal lens with a clear artificial lens (an intraocular lens) positioned behind the iris. The iris is never altered, so eye color is unchanged. Because the replaced lens cannot later cloud into a cataract, CLR also serves as a cataract-prevention alternative for suitable patients.

Why do colors look different after lens replacement?

After lens replacement, colors can look brighter, cooler, or more vivid — but this is a change in light transmission, not eye color. Over time the eye’s natural lens can yellow, filtering the light that reaches the retina. Replacing it with a clear lens lets more light through, so colors appear crisper. This perception shift is temporary as the brain adjusts, and it does not alter the iris.

What actually changes eye color?

Some procedures and conditions do change how the iris looks. Cosmetic iris implants, keratopigmentation (corneal tattooing), and laser iris depigmentation can alter apparent eye color, but they carry documented risks, and as of 2026, they are not FDA-approved for cosmetic use in the United States, where the American Academy of Ophthalmology cautions against them. Eye color can also shift naturally over a lifetime: melanin develops through early childhood, and aging, certain illnesses, and some medications can change iris color over time. For a low-risk way to change apparent eye color, colored contact lenses remain the standard option.
