The Honor of Being First
Imagine driving at night without struggling to read street signs, and imagine never having to worry about taking out contact lenses to shower, swim, or sleep. Imagine what it would be like to wake up in the morning, open your eyes, and see the world crisply and clearly without having to reach for a pair of glasses or stumble to the bathroom for contact lenses.
Next week, St. Louis-based Brinton Vision will be the first in the nation to begin making those possibilities a reality in a whole new way for people whose nearsightedness and astigmatism have kept them from having clear, natural vision.
Dr. Jason P. Brinton will be the first refractive surgeon in the U.S. to perform a procedure called Visian Toric Implantable Collamer Lenses (Toric ICL), a LASIK alternative designed for people who are nearsighted and who have significant astigmatism.
We’re incredibly honored that STAAR Surgical Company, the company responsible for the development of this technology, and for over one million successful stories of both Visian ICL and Visian Toric ICL around the world, chose Brinton Vision for this distinction. We’re also honored to represent St. Louis as an emerging hub for the best LASIK, and the best LASIK alternatives.
What is Visian Toric ICL?
Visian Toric ICL is a LASIK alternative specifically created for people with myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism, or a curvature to the outer shape of the eyeball.
An implantable lens made from a body-friendly material called Collamer is placed behind the iris and in front of the lens of the eye, invisible from the outside. This quick and comfortable procedure is safe, proven, and effective.
Sometimes called an implantable contact lens, ICLs are much like “permanent” contact lenses, enabling patients to have clear vision, but without the hassles and risks of infections involved with wearing contacts too long, in water, or without washing hands prior to inserting them.
Toric ICLs are a specialized kind of implantable lens that adapts better to the shape of the eye when it has astigmatism.
Nature is never completely perfect. Everyone has some level of astigmatism, but when that curvature starts to look more like a football than a basketball—something that is relatively common—SBK LASIK and other solutions are often not the best choice. Many people have been told they are not candidates for corrective eye surgery because of their astigmatism.
In the past, ASA, often called Advanced PRK, has been an effective solution, but ASA does come with discomfort and a longer healing time than LASIK and other alternatives.
For many people, Visian Toric ICL is the solution they’ve been waiting for. Not only is the procedure comfortable for most patients, but it’s also safe and effective.
Is Visian Toric ICL New?
Visian Toric ICL is not new in the world of ophthalmology; in fact, it has been used outside of the United States for over 17 years. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it for use in the United States last week, though it has been used safely and effectively in over 450,000 patients.
According to Francis W. Price Jr., MD, president of the Price Vision Group in Indianapolis and founder and board president of the Cornea Research Foundation of America, where toric lenses are available, about 40 percent of the implantable Collamer lenses are toric.
Who is a Candidate for Visian Toric ICL?
People who struggle with moderate to extreme nearsightedness and moderate to severe astigmatism are often prime candidates for Visian Toric ICL. In the past, many of these people have been told they could not be helped by laser vision correction because their prescription was too high or because their astigmatism was too significant. Now there is hope.
Other people who have been told they are not candidates in the past will also find that Visian Toric ICL is a safe, effective solution. For example, it can help people who have thin corneas, large pupils and/or a history of dry eyes.
As one of seven procedures done regularly and successfully at Brinton Vision, Visian Toric ICL is part of an arsenal of treatments that is changing people’s lives in St. Louis and beyond—even when they’ve been left without hope at other LASIK centers.
So What Does It Mean to be Chosen to be First?
Dr. Jason P. Brinton is a Visian ICL implant specialist. He is North America’s number one inserter of the lens implant, and has had tremendous success with his patients at Brinton Vision. The process of inserting Visian Toric ICL lenses is very similar to the process of inserting Visian ICLs, which Dr. Brinton has done successfully on hundreds of patients.
Diagnostics make all the difference. In order for Dr. Brinton to determine which, if any, of the seven FDA-approved procedures is best for you, he has to have a complete understanding of your vision, your lifestyle and your goals.
Not only has he invested in the time, effort, and esteemed institutions needed to educate himself on even the most minute of details, he has also invested in seven of the most advanced diagnostic technologies available in the world. It’s a difference his patients notice, and one that thousands of successful outcomes show. It’s also one that STAAR Surgical recognized when tapping Dr. Brinton with the honor of being first to perform its recently approved Visian Toric ICLs.
It takes a lot to be recognized as one of the best LASIK surgeons in St. Louis, and also throughout the country and internationally. To those of us who work with Dr. Brinton, it comes as no surprise that he’s been chosen time and again as the best of the best. After all, he has dedicated his life to helping people obtain the priceless gift of clear, natural vision. He is the only full-time refractive surgeon in the state to specialize in LASIK and all six of its modern variations.
