In this article, we examine patient satisfaction rates for Custom Lens Replacement (CLR), also known as Refractive Lens Exchange. This is one of the most popular vision correction options at Brinton Vision because it simultaneously addresses many vision concerns. It may just be the procedure for you.
What is the Patient Satisfaction Rate for Custom Lens Replacement Surgery?
A recent widespread study found that 87% of people who had CLR said they were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their vision. Within our practice at Brinton Vision, satisfaction rates are much higher, with a recent survey showing that 96.5% of Brinton Vision patients would recommend Custom Lens Replacement to their friends and family. In the study, the most common reasons for being unhappy were difficulties with night vision, not being able to read small print up close, and symptoms associated with ocular surface disease. If you have any specific concerns, you may ask your doctor at your consultation.
At Brinton Vision, the number one thing we hear from our patients is that they wish they had done it sooner. Our patients are highly satisfied with their decision to have a Custom Lens Replacement and often describe the colors as brighter and more vivid. What Factors Predict Post-Operative Patient Satisfaction Following Custom Lens Replacement Surgery (CLR)?
Six elements contribute to patient satisfaction following CLR surgery that should be included in a comprehensive approach to patient care. These six include:
- A detailed preoperative consultation where exact measurements are taken on your unique eyes
- Accurate Intraocular Lens (IOL) calculations by your surgeon so the right lenses are selected for your procedure and vision needs
- Post-operative care that includes thorough follow-ups
- Ensuring the precise correction for your specific vision needs by hitting an accurate refractive target
- Treating any disturbances on the surface of your eye
- Managing healing process expectations such as early night-time visual phenomena
Post-operative dry eye can be managed with appropriate medication, and thorough patient education helps manage expectations about potential visual disturbances, such as glare or starbursts at night, which are temporary and resolve over time.
What is Custom Lens Replacement?
Custom Lens Replacement, often referred to as CLR, refractive lens exchange, lens replacement surgery, or clear lens extraction, is an innovative ophthalmology procedure that corrects nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Most of the time it is the preferred refractive surgery procedure in someone who wears readers, bifocals, progressives, or has to wear readers over contact lenses. However, CLR is sometimes the preferred procedure in other situations, such as in extreme farsightedness at any age. These are conditions that are best treated with a lens-based option rather than LASIK or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
Custom Lens Replacement involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) to correct refractive errors. This is essentially the same procedure as cataract surgery, which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. When performed off-label before cataracts develop, custom lens replacement prevents the development of cataracts. It is performed under local anesthesia, using phacoemulsification – a technique that gently removes the natural lens with an ultrasound. Once the natural lens is removed, a prescription intraocular lens is inserted into the lens capsule.
Is Custom Lens Replacement Worth It?
From a patient satisfaction perspective, the data suggests a resounding “yes.” RLE/CLR often results in excellent distance, intermediate, and near vision, reducing the need for glasses or contact lenses. For many patients, the prospect of gaining independence from glasses or contact lenses significantly boosts their quality of life.
CLR pays for itself by eliminating decades of expensive glasses and contacts and is able to treat most of your vision needs in one procedure. One of the other major benefits of Custom Lens Replacement is that since CLR involves the removal of the aging lens, it prevents the development of cataracts – a significant advantage as cataracts are a common cause of vision loss in the aging population. Our Brinton Vision patients would agree that CLR is definitely worth it!
