Relocating to St. Louis – Frequently Asked Questions

Most people are surprised by how easy the transition is. St. Louis offers many of the cultural, dining, and entertainment amenities of a major metro area, but with significantly less congestion, stress, and cost of living. Many professionals relocating from coastal cities find the pace of life refreshing rather than limiting.

St. Louis has a vibrant and diverse food scene, nationally recognized restaurants, major museums, live music, theater, and professional sports teams. Cultural institutions like the Saint Louis Art Museum, Fox Theatre, and St. Louis Symphony are major draws — many with free or low-cost access.

The cost of living in St. Louis is dramatically lower than in New York, Boston, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. Most professionals find they can afford larger, more comfortable housing, shorter commutes, and a higher overall quality of life — often while saving more than they could in a coastal city.

Commutes in the St. Louis area are typically short and predictable. Many physicians and optometrists commute 15–25 minutes, even from desirable suburban neighborhoods. This translates directly into more personal time during the week.

Yes. St. Louis Lambert International Airport offers extensive domestic nonstop service and now includes multiple nonstop international routes to Europe, including London and Frankfurt. This makes travel to the East Coast, West Coast, and Europe straightforward and convenient.

Many physicians and professionals live in West St. Louis County communities such as Creve Coeur, Town & Country, Clayton, Ladue, and surrounding areas. These neighborhoods are known for excellent schools, green space, safety, and easy access to both the clinic and the city.

St. Louis has a strong medical and optometric community, anchored by major academic institutions, teaching hospitals, and specialty practices. Many clinicians find the professional environment collaborative and accessible, with opportunities for teaching, research, and leadership that can be harder to access in larger, more saturated markets.

Common reasons include work–life balance, affordability, professional autonomy, strong communities, and the ability to build a fulfilling personal and professional life without constant tradeoffs.

Yes. Relocation assistance is available for out-of-state candidates, and we’re happy to share insights on neighborhoods, housing, and settling into the area.
